What is the Castle Café?
The Castle Café
is a student-run school café providing a variety of food items for students
& staff to enjoy.
Why is it called the “Castle Café”?
Here at Robert
Service School we are known as the Knights. The Castle Café is a “home” for the
Knights (RSS students).
Who runs the Castle Café?
The Castle Café
is run by the high school Foods classes, under the supervision of the Foods teacher,
Tara McCauley.
What days does the Castle Café operate?
For the 2016-2017 school year, the Castle Café will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays
from September to December & February to May. Occasionally, we may be closed on those days
depending on activities and events happening in the school. Closures will be
posted in advance.
What does the Castle Café sell?
The menu changes
daily & a menu for each month will be available on the Castle Café website
at least a week prior to the start of that month.
This semester, we are offering a daily Lunch Special. The lunch special is a complete meal, usually a main dish and side(s)- including at least 3 of the 4 food groups. The special will also include a choice of beverage, milk or juice box and choice of sweet or fruit option.

How do I know what is in the food being served?
We endeavour to
provide a range of items so that different dietary needs can be met. Look for
the symbols indicating if a certain food is gluten free (GF), dairy free (DF),
vegetarian (V), vegan (Vg)
or a healthy choice (HC). Also look for gluten
free option (GFO), dairy free option (DFO), vegetarian option (VO)
items that can easily be adjusted to suit different dietary needs. If your
child has specific dietary needs, please make sure you give full detail when
registering your child. If you would like to discuss your child’s specific
needs, feel free to contact Tara McCauley to make arrangements. As menus are
planned far in advance, please note that menu items may be subject to change depending
on product availability.
What if I cannot afford the Castle Café?
It is important
that our menu be as affordable as possible in order to meet the food needs of
all Robert Service School students. If you feel that you cannot afford this
service but would like your child to participate, please contact the school
office (Paulette or Sonja at 993-5435) or our CELCs (Julia at 993-3753-high
school or Ashley at 993-3723-elementary) and we can arrange lunches for your
child through the Food for Learning budget. With lunches through Food for
Learning, you are still able to set up an account and order for your child (in
elementary) through the Castle Café website or we can sit down with your child
to place their order.
How do I order food for my child?
The café works
differently depending on whether students are in elementary (Kindergarten to
Grade 6) or high school (Grade 7 to 12). Please click on the "Learn
more" button under elementary or high school heading to find specific
ordering information.
How do I know that the food being prepared is safe
and good for my child?
Our attitude
towards food is that from scratch is best. Whenever possible we prepare food
from the freshest ingredients. We try to avoid using prepackaged foods that may
contain additives and other undesirable ingredients. All food is prepared
according to the Robert Service School’s nutrition policy. In addition, all of
our student cooks have successfully completed Food Safe Level I and adhere to Food Safe practices.
